Members of the Society visited a rural gem, on the 19th June, the Rural Activities Centre. On a day when there were no clouds just bright blue skies our group made their way to a small oasis amongst the heavy traffic. Mark Pearman started by introducing us to the history and development of the site. He then gave us a tour of the site and what a revelation it was – from the topiary, the fruit section, Christmas tree growing area, the poly tunnels for growing plants – including those that will be used for their exhibit at RHS Hampton Court Show – the fish pond, the area for the chickens and the bees. It was a total revelation. From the outside there was no indication of how much was being achieved within such a small site. There are now plans for expansion – including the car park! With the closure of so many Day Centres the Rural Garden Centre provides valuable training and employment for many people with learning difficulties. They work under the supervision of trained staff and the result is a credit to their hard work. If you have not been then please take the time to visit and marvel at what can be achieved. The address is West Drayton Road UB8 3JZ
