It was good to see so many people at the Autumn Show. To be honest the Committee were not sure what the uptake would be with regards to exhibits and to people coming to view the show. Once again the membership came up trumps. The weather helped and the Pimms and cake certainly drew in the crowds.
Despite the dire predictions regarding the effect of the weather on the Dahlias and how everything worthwhile had gone past their best the Judge was of the opinion that the standard was very high and the quality of the exhibits in Dahlias, General Flora, Pot plants, Fruit and Vegetables was very good. All though the number of exhibits was down on 2019 there was still a good showing. Members of the public were very complimentary about the Dahlias and perhaps may be encouraged to have ago next year. As always the Cacti and Succulents attract the visitors with their wonderful shapes and dangerous looking spines.
It is perhaps not surprising that there were a lot of entries in the domestic and craft sections – everyone has had a lot of time on their hands….the standard is always exceptionally high and the items so diverse from the model of the Tower at Kew Gardens (made from lollipop sticks) to knitted garments, stuffed toys, quilts, art work and embroidery. Our members are truly very talented.
At this Show a new idea was introduced whereby those members who did not want to enter the competition could still support the Show by displaying their “Lockdown projects”. This section was amazing. What some of our members got up to during lockdown…..painting rocks, producing photographs for a digital photo frame, colourful paintings, large quilts, bags and embroidery of every kind. Murmurs of appreciation could be heard as people passed the exhibition.
The produce stall was a great success – the plants and the pots of jam flew of the stall. The good weather meant that there were a lot of people around and they certainly enjoyed the Pimms and cake and a big thank you to our volunteers, Avril and family along with Wendy Jones who ran the stall for the whole afternoon. The maestros of the raffle Tony and Jim worked their magic again and charmed money from the visitors all for the good of the Society.
The final mention should go to the members who have supported the Society – it was delightful to hear the buzz of voices through the afternoon enjoying the Show.
